Overcoming Childhood Obesity

Helping Adolescents Thrive with Sustainable Nutrition and Activity

Kim, a dedicated mother of three who prioritized her children’s happiness above all else. While she enjoyed fulfilling her children’s needs, Kim noticed gradual weight gain and a decline in her children’s energy levels. Kim’s two sons and a daughter aged 15, 13 and 10 used to play outside. However, in recent months, she noticed that they were reluctant to participate in physical games and would rather lounge around on their devices or watch television during their rest times. Concerned about their health and wanting to set a positive example for her children, she sought professional guidance.

During our discovery consultation, we conducted a thorough understanding of their family’s preferences focusing on her children’s, lifestyle and routine. We uncovered four potential factors for their declining interest in outdoor activities and poor dietary choices.

The Challenge:

Kim’s family faced several challenges:

  • Unhealthy Eating Habits: Children’s meals often revolve around convenience and processed foods, lacking the variety and nutritional value Kim knew her children needed.
  • Unexciting Physical Activity: Despite their previous enthusiasm, Kim’s children are now finding outdoor play less engaging and are exhibiting decreased motivation.
  • Family Mealtimes: Family meals were often hectic, with limited time for healthy food preparation and distractions like screens.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: Kim observed that her children were becoming increasingly sedentary, spending more time indoors on screens and less on outdoor activities.

The Nutrition Consultation Experience:

We worked closely with Kim and her family to develop a sustainable plan that addressed their unique needs:

  • Fun and Empowering Mealtimes: We introduced fun and colourful meals, involving her children in meal preparation and decisions whenever possible.
  • Healthy Snack Swaps: We helped the family identify and implement healthy snack swaps, replacing sugary treats with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Re-energizing Family Activities: We focused on gradual and sustainable changes, introducing new family-based games encouraging communication and connection and limiting sedentary behaviours gradually.
  • Active Play: We encouraged increased physical activity through fun activities like family walks, bike rides, and playing at the park.
  • Family-Wide Support: We emphasized the importance of family-wide support and encouraged healthy eating habits for the entire family.

Results Achieved:

Through consistent effort, Kim’s children began to make significant progress. They started enjoying fruits and vegetables, developed a taste for including colour in their meals, and became more active. Most importantly, they regained energy levels and reported feeling more confident and happier finding joy in the family activities they participate in.

  • Improved Dietary Choices: Kim’s Children are successfully able to make informed decisions and are consistently reminding and correcting their parents when they make sub-optimal choices.
  • Weight Management & Increased Energy Levels: The family has shed their excess weight together and regained their energy levels finding excitement in playing together.
  • Enhanced Family Bonding: Family time has become more interactive and enjoyable strengthening communication and connection.
